SWIM wrapped up their loaded 2021 release slate with their Sleepwalking EP, a collection of songs which includes the four singles the group released between January and May and debuts their fifth single, Sleepwalking. These five songs represent the first third of SWIM’s forthcoming debut LP and offer listeners the opportunity to sample the album’s singles as they anticipate the release of the full-length record in 2022.

Sleepwalking is a song originally penned by lead singer Dan McCaffrey in December 2019. After the chord progression, lyrics, and early melodies were captured in a GarageBand demo late one night, McCaffrey presented the idea to Riviezzo, Morelli, and D’Angio as a clean, deliberate pop hook which was written to serve as an album-opener. With the help of producer Nick Zinnanti of ZIN Records (Sony/ATV Music Publishing), the track quickly developed to take on its distinct 80s-influenced, alternative dance-pop sound.

SWIM called upon a wide variety of influences while perfecting Sleepwalking in the studio, including The Black Keys, Bleachers, and COIN. “Sleepwalking is a song which is meant to capture and communicate that vulnerability that you may feel when you desperately want something to work out even while you know deep down inside that, for reasons out of your control, it probably won’t,” says lead vocalist Dan McCaffrey. “I think that four of us agreed early on that the doubt and longing this song conveys we’re underlying themes in the album we were sort of conceptualizing, and so this track just felt naturally like a good opening statement for both this EP and for the LP, ultimately..”

After agreeing that Sleepwalking stood out as a good choice to open the album, the band needed to be sure that it delivered just enough energy and peaked the interest of their listeners just enough to keep them interested in what’s to come. “For this song, we leaned heavily into what we believed was a strong melody and built the rest of the song around that and a good groove in the percussion. Our producer and friend Nick Zinnanti helped us to fit in some counter melodies and guitar licks here and there, but truly this song is all about engaging in the story that the lyrics are describing for you,” said lead guitarist Nick Riviezzo. Bassist and keyboardist Pat Morelli added: “Oh Honey, The Chase, Never Knew, and Moonlight were all written as compositions woven into the greater tapestry of this album which has always felt like an eventuality to us, and Sleepwalking is the very first installment. So there was a tone that needed to be set. When we put it together with the other four singles, we got the Sleepwalking EP, and that was our way of wrapping up this first chapter and giving our fans an idea of what they can expect from an LP which we have grown so proud of.”

“Simply put, we had a blast writing, recording, and producing Sleepwalking, and we hope that you have a blast listening to it. This song came together quickly; the best ones always do,” said drummer Brian D’Angio. “The Sleepwalking EP is just the beginning, and we hope that our listeners will be sticking around to hear the full story very soon.”
