THE PERFECT SONG FOR SUMMER, SWIM RELEASES THIRD SINGLE OF THE YEAR “NEVER KNEW”
SWIM keeps the energy up with the release of their third single of the year, “Never Knew,” a track poised to become their summer anthem following the releases of “Moonlight” and “Oh Honey” earlier in 2021.
Multi-instrumentalist Patrick Morelli began writing the song in the fall of 2019 in anticipation of the forthcoming LP. “The core theme for the song was inspired by my experiences during the previous two summers,” said Morelli. “I was given such a unique opportunity and met some incredible people. I got lost in the whirlwind of events and I wasn’t able to grasp how fortunate I was to have had these experiences until I looked back on them while writing this song. I wanted to write a song that captured that euphoria for anyone who listens, and to remind myself of such a surreal time in my life.”
Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dan McCaffrey jumped right on board with Morelli’s vision for the song. McCaffrey recollects his first time hearing the song: “I knew it was going to be special. I immediately heard a horn line, like the one in ‘Watermelon Sugar’, which would really lift the song and give it the energy we wanted.”
During the spring and summer of 2020, Morelli and McCaffrey sent voice memos back and forth in an effort to complete the song. However, a good chorus eluded them before finally coming to Morelli late one night. Nick Riviezzo, lead guitarist, remembers finishing up the song in drummer Brian D’Angio’s basement. “It felt so good to finally be together and hear this completed version of the song after we went on to demo it on my computer and write lyrics to the new chorus melody. When it all came together I think we had this good feeling that people are going to want to sing along to this.”
Once lyrics were solidified, D’Angio did a great job laying down a beat that made the verses groove, something which was lacking in the original acoustic guitar and vocal demo. D’Angio states, “One of the most difficult but most satisfying parts of the writing process is translating a subdued acoustic demo into a full-band arrangement with drums. It’s the time where I can be most creative while also choosing what groove suits the song best because it will likely dictate the progression of the finished product.”
When the band was finally able to bring the completed song to record at Zin Records in the winter of 2020 they were met with another obstacle, a rise in COVID cases which forced them to record remotely and send all tracks to Nick Zinnanti for production. Another unique aspect of the recording process for “Never Knew” was the arrangement of a brass part. SWIM found talent in an unlikely source, Morelli and D’Angio’s former high school jazz band conductor and professional trumpet player, Jason Chapman. “Mr. Chapman was incredible. He was immediately on board when we sent him the demo. He took what we had and added his expertise when arranging the parts,” said Morelli.
Morelli concludes by saying that the band is “so thankful for all the support we have received since releasing the track.” “We hope you like the song and are able to associate ‘Never Knew’ with happy times during this summer and beyond. Peace and love!”
